Saturday, May 15, 2010

My ride took me to Puntarenas where we had the vehicle loaded onto a ferry and took that across the waters to get to the Nicoya Peninsula. I met an older man from my ride on the boat and we sat together sharing stories about our past adventures and travels and our future hopes and goals. We also shared quite a bit about our lives and that was when I realized I was alone now, without my mom, and about to have to figure out how to get to certain places and how to meet and make fast friends. He was an extremely fun and interesting guy to talk to. He was, I would say about late 50's or early 60's, though he was fit and full of life. He talked about how he's made over 200 skydiving jumps but its "of no thrill since it takes no skill. Anyone can fall from the sky." He was in Costa Rica to attend Escuela de Sol, a surfing school on the Nicoya. He had always wanted to learn and it was the perfect opportunity for him now since his wife had passed away about a year before.
I found out later that he was actually only about a 25 minute bus ride away from Rainsong, where I would be interning, and once he heard what I would be doing there he was eager to see when he could come and tour the sanctuary and catch up with me about his surfing lessons (Though the day he showed up to visit, I was off duty and not at the sanctuary but he did tell my supervisor/boss Mary and another volunteer to let me know he had stopped by as promised and that his surfing experience was rivetting!)

From the other side of the waters, our vehicle unloaded from the ferry and traveled through small towns and Montezuma until we reached Cabuya and the Rainsong Wildlife Sanctuary site.
