-      Many stops along the coast in Boardman State Park.  Sea stacks, low cloud cover with a bit of a nip in the air.  Visions of Japanese rock gardens fill my mind.  Imagine giants in this landscape so the large sea stacks look like boulders to humans.

-      Found our home in the hamlet of Hiouchi, 12 minutes from Crescent City.  Sounds of the Smith River have replaced the sounds of the ocean waves.  Long wide balcony and stone beach along the river seems glorious.  We look across the river and see a forested mountain with the fog that the trees love.

Driving up to our home rental at the end of a winding narrow private drive, walking in the door and feeling a sigh of relief.  It's just as the photos showed and absolutely immaculate and obviously lovingly cared for.  A fresh flower arrangement of rhododendrons in the kitchen and an orchid arrangement on the kitchen table say it all.  When we messed up the TV remotes, we called Johnny, the owner and he came over to show us how it works and also how to work the fireplaces – we’re from Miami Beach, after all.  Nothing better to be in the woods on a river with a real wood fireplace going!  Evening is settling in and it’s so pleasantly quiet.  We are so glad that we chose this home in the country, so close to Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, on the Smith River with a private beach. Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park has many old growth stands and is less visited than the other redwood parks.  There are two 5 star hikes in the park that we plan to do.  The Smith River is the last major free flowing river in California.  What a location!  The photos accurately represent this home as it is.  But photos can’t truly give you the feeling of a place in its setting, and this place is quiet except for the sound of the river! Love it!      It’s called "Hiouchi House" on the Smith River:
The property managers/owners are Johnny& Nancy Cash.  They can be reached at
