Where I stayed
- Breakfast at Bijou in Portland. We meet up with Karen, a friend of Stu's that we met on our last visit to Portland. In addition to an omellete and hot coffee, we try an Oregon mushroom hash that is surprisingly spicy but tasty.
ˇ We’re on a road trip! We’re doing an auto caravan on our way to Yachats on the Oregon coast where we will stay for the next 4 nights. We’re following Stu on I-5 south and then we head toward the coast via Eugene. There are shorter drives to Yachats, but Stu has a few stop-offs in mind for us.
o Rhododendron Garden in Eugene
o Walgreens in Eugene, isn’t on Stu’s original plan for us today. But Harvey has developed an intestinal issue and we contacted our doctor in Miami before leaving the Bijou earlier today. After talking over his symptoms, our physician has phoned in a prescription to our local pharmacist and they are arranging for us to pick it up here in Eugene. How is that for the convenience of a national pharmacy chain?
o Mapleton is a step back to the 60’s. We stop in at the Alpha-Bit café and bookstore and wish that we were hungry. The homemade goodies and lunch & dinner items and the environment looked like a homey place to settle in for awhile.
o View of the Pacific Ocean and sand dunes. There is a point in the road near Florence where we are driving north up the coast that you can see sand dunes and the Pacific Ocean. There wasn’t anyplace to pull off the road to take in the view, but it was so cool to see
o View of the Pacific Ocean and Heceta Lighthouse. We pass the Sea Lion Caves and Stu crosses traffic to a pull out where we can park the car. It is just at a turn in the road and I’m anxious about not being able to see oncoming traffic, but I follow Stu’s lead. We park and take in a grand view of the Pacific Ocean as well as the Heceta Lighthouse where we will be staying on our return trip back to Portland. I take a big deep breath and absorb the ocean air and big ocean and big sky!
o Check in at Overleaf Lodge on the northern section of the small seaside town of Yachats. We’re delighted to see that our suite is directly on the Oregon coastal trail with sliding glass doors that look out directly onto the ocean and crashing waves with our very own blow-hole! It’s just so magnificent that I say to Harvey and Stu that I could stay right here for the next few days – no need to see anything else in the area!
o Dinner at the Drift Inn, Yachats. Live music, a warm and friendly place and lots of choices on the menu may make this a favorite for us. It’s been a full day so we are a bit tired but say that we’ll be back again to tarry more over dinner and listen to the music another night
o Sunset on the Pacific Ocean at the Overleaf Lodge. What a way to end the day!
ˇ I’m feeling overwhelmed by this road trip with Stu, Harvey and I. It’s like being teenagers again…a sense of freedom and fun.
ˇ When our physician in Miami picked up the phone to help Harvey, knowing that we are traveling and have an issue, I felt thankful. Some people are special and she is one of those special ones.
