Where I stayed

We spent just one night in Waitomo visiting the famous glowworm caves. Tara had the bright idea that we pay $100 each to "Blackwater "Raft" " inside the caves. The idea sounded like it would be more fun than it turned out to be. First, they gave us wet, 5 mm wetsuits to put on on an already cold day. They then made us parade around in them like a bunch of idiot tourists with inter-tubes stuck to our butts while they laughed at us and took pictures that they later tried to sell to us as "memories". After the guides completely humiliated us they lead us deep underground to what I would have though to be hell until they made us get into the frigid 6 degree Celsius water in the caves. At that point I realized we weren't in hell, because it was much too cold to be hell. The glowworms made it worth the horrible pain that we had to endure on the tour. As we floated down in the darkness of the caves on our old bike tires they called a "raft", we turned off our head lamps for a few minutes to observe the hundreds of thousands of glowworms on the ceiling. There were so many of them that in the darkness of the cave it looked just like a star-filled night in the middle of the desert. Quite amazing! Nobody moved or said anything for about 10 minutes, but by that point it was probably because we were all frozen stiff. When we finally got to the end, we pried the frozen bike tires from our butts, ripped off the nearly frozen wetsuits like we were in the NBA, and went straight for some warm showers. Overall, it was a great experience, but I get to choose the next "adventure"...
