After staying with the nice old couple that mysteriously offered us a place to stay in their house on the lake, we got up and drove the rest of the way to Christchurch. It turned out to be a really cool city. We spent the first day at the Willowbank Animal Sanctuary, where we saw some cool animals, including the infamous Kiwi that can only be found in remote areas of New Zealand. The next day we drove to the remote French village of Akaroa. It was a cool little town built in the crater of an extinct volcano. Unfortunately for us, the small town only had shops with $14 ice cream cones and overly-inflated tour prices, so it wasn't the best place for us poor backpackers to have headed for the day. That evening, we went to a local pub and talked to some of the creepiest Kiwis in the country and some nice Canadians who just got finished touring the Antarctic. Tomorrow we head up the coast to Kaikoura.
