We left Te Anau today and started our semi-long drive towards Christchurch to then head on our way up the east coast back to Picton. The drive was beautiful because we detoured through the Southern Alps on our way eastbound and drove by some great glacier lakes, mountains (including Mt. Cook), rivers and valleys. We left just as an extreme weather front was hitting the area, so we had to drive over some high peaks during a windstorm with 140 km/h winds blowing. Around 5 o'clock we got a little town on a glacier lake called Lake Tekapo. While we were in the information center being told that there was absolutely nowhere for us to stay in town and our best bet was to keep on going towards Christchurch, a very nice old Kiwi lady and her husband overheard us being shot down and said "Why, I think you two can just come and stay with us at our cabin on the lake." We were a bit hesitant at first, but then after we thought about it for a minute or two, we concluded that they didn't look like serial killers who eat people and take their faces, so we took them up on their offer. They had an amazing little cabin overlooking the beautiful turquoise waters of Lake Tekapo. They gave us a nice dinner and a bed to sleep in and they turned out to be really nice people. In the morning, we thanked them and said goodbye, then continued on our way to Christchurch.
