Well I made it to Hong Kong without incident - well, almost. As I was talking to my mom on a payphone right before customs, I discovered my passport was gone! Good times! Of course mother also started to panick, which helped my state of mind immeasurably. Thankfully, when I went to the information desk, an officer was perusing it. After a stern "Be More Careful!!!", he handed it back to me and I was on my way!
I made my way on the airport express train to my hotel in Kowloon - the mainland part of Hong Kong. The train there was great - I got a great glimpse of this magnificent city and I totally got revved up for this next rather big leg (although almost final!) of my trip. The hotel my tour company had us in was great and I relaxed for a bit before exploring the city. I wandered down to the area known as Tsim Sha Tsui, where there's lots of shopping and restaurants - by the far the largest Louis Vuitton I have EVER seen, AND it had a line up DOWN THE STREET!!! I couldn't believe it!! Anyway, after salivating over the Prada and Salvatore (how I miss you! all my darlings back home! ps. darlings=shoes of course!), I grabbed a bite and then wandered back up to the hotel for a meeting with the tour leader.
I discovered that our tour was super small - only 4 of us plus the guide!! There was an australian couple, Liz and Scott, and Ana, our fourth, was yet to arrive from Boston. So the three present members went with our leader for some cantonese food across the street and then wandered the city at night. We went into the night markets in Kowloon, and then down to the waterfront and walked along there "walk of the stars".
The next day we grabbed a yummy chinese breakfast of dumplings and rice (it was quite funny as they seated us with another group of foreigners - I think they like to keep us all in one place to keep an eye on us :P) and then took the metro down to Hong Kong island to go up to the Peak to see the city from on high. It was a great view, although the clouds/fog hindered us from getting a truly great perspective on the city. We then headed back up to Kowloon where I managed to buy a nice cell phone to replace my lost one and then we met up with our guide, and Ana, and headed to the Chinese border to grab our train from Shenzhen to Yangshuo.
While I was only there for the briefest of times, I REALLY liked Hong Kong and can't WAIT to go back to it! There's sooo much to do there, and the shopping looks great, so as soon as I recover from my current financial crisis resulting from THIS trip, another one will most certainly be in order!
