Due to Air Tahiti Nui delaying our flight by 5 hours in Auckland, we missed our connection to our number one destination, Easter Island! So, here we were stranded on a desert island, Tahiti of all places! The airline has, of course, booked us on the next available flight out which is 4 days away and provided us with accommodation and food until we leave..................in THE number one resort on the island, InterContinental Beachcomber resort, oh dear!!
So, for 4 days, we have been going from our hotel room to a restaurant for breakfast, then to the lagoon pool, then for lunch, back to the pool to go snorkeling with the exotic fish, hand feeding stingrays, relaxing, then get dressed for dinner. Tough life! We couldn´t really move because we ate so much (by the way, 3* in Michelin Guide restaurants......). Great seafood.
During our stay, there was a show on Friday and Saturday night, it was very good, traditional Tahitian dancers shaking their butts like we have never seen before. The music is enchanting and I can understand why people want to stay here. When they were about to finish the show, it was time for the audience to join in...........The lead dancer came and grabbed Anne Marie up on stage to be the lead dancer from the audience. Of course being an Irish dancer, she handled it with ease, the Polynesian Gods must have been in on it!!
A business contact arranged a private tour of the island for us, showed us around the entire island, very interesting, learnt about this history of the island, some people live on very little, there is an abundance of fruit growing everywhere, grapefruits, avocados, pineapples and also flowers everywhere.
We didn´t get a chance to visit the other islands (next time!). Enjoyed our stay very much however we did feel that we may need a break like this at the end of our journey rather that the beginning. Ever since we left Australia, we have said, Ok, now we´re REALLY roughing it and of course, we keep ending up in nice hotels. So, here we come Easter Island....
