We drove down to the bach on Friday evening once the roads had calmed down - Auckland roads can be manic at the best of times, never mind on the last long weekend before the children go back to school!
We stopped off in Green Bay on route for fresh fish and chips and sat at the picnic table down near the little beach to eat them
We finally arrived down in Port Waikato around 9pm - Jules was starting to think we had been abducted by aliens, so I think they were rather glad when we arrived safely! It was then a case of unpacking and sorting out the children and getting them off to bed ready for a big weekend. Then a sit down and a G&T and beer for the boys!
Events of the weekend:
Saturday - playing in the big waves down at Sunset Beach. All of the children seemed to enjoy the waves and playing with the body boards and the masks and snorkels. The grownups enjoyed it too :-)
Sunday - the rather damp morning started with the fishing competition. Wearing waterproofs we headed to the dunes with our fishing rods and buckets, hopeful of some big catches! The first hour was very slow with no bites, which proved challenging for us, trying to keep the kids interested. Eventually Lucy caught the first and as it turned out, the biggest fish of the day. Then as if by magic the fish began to bite and the children began to catch, first Dan, then Meg and Grayson
After all the excitement early afternoon was spent relaxing at the bach, before we headed back down to the beach to play with the kites and explore the rock pools. The children loved running around in the fresh sea air, finding crabs and lots and lots of starfish
Monday - playing in the big waves down at Sunset Beach again. Once again we all had a ball although if I am honest I think the grown ups had more fun this time using the body boards in particular Jeff and Jules! Jeff had one big smirk on his face the whole time he was in the water! It was a real pull having to leave the beach behind to go back to the bach for lunch, then a thorough clean up before heading off back to Auckland.
We had a thoroughly enjoyable weekend with Dean, Jules, Grayson and Meg - thank you :-) and once again a big thank you to Larissa and Brent for letting us use the bach :-)
We called off on the way home to buy two body boards in the sales - 40% off! We now can't wait for the weekend to give them a go :-)
