After arriving at the hotel in Monterey after the children were asleep, they were very excited to explore in the morning.......particularly when they realised that there was a pool right outside of the patio doors!

Breakfast was interesting!!  We were down for 9.40am so were well on with our food, before the cut off at 10am.  As soon as 10am came, she closed the curtains and started clearing away the food.  So there we were sat in the dark eating bagels and cereal.  Dan dropped his banana on the floor and by this point she had cleared away the fruit.  I asked her for another one, she pulled a face and hesitated, before going to get one when we said, 'Come on, he dropped it on the floor!'  Anyone would think it was her banana!

After breakfast we headed downtown into Monterey.  I had been to Monterey in the early ninetys with my Mum but it had changed beyond recognition in some places.  However, the warf and Cannery area was just the same, however, there were not lots of sea otters floating about in the kelp like last time.  I was really disappointed as I really wanted the children to see one relaxing on its back :-(  We wandered down the walking trail and found the very same Reebok shop I had visited last time.  They had some really good deals.  After spending 120 we had acquired: 3 pairs of trainers, 2 packs of trainer socks, 2 running vests, a pair of shorts and 2 baseball caps.  We thought we had done ok!

This seemed to take an age so after a quick lunch we headed off to the beach at Carmel.  What a beautiful place Carmel is - we just wish we had had more time to explore the shops.  Some of the buildings were so beautiful and looked as though they had just come from Hansel & Gretel....gorgeous little cottages.  The shops were very up market but looked very interesting!

We all had a great time on the beach, particularly Lucy and Daniel.  They are really missing not having a chance to play.  We wandered down the beach before chilling out in the sand, while they played in the ocean and in the sand.  It was lovely to see so many dogs on the beach with their owners.  Apparently, Carmel folk love their dogs......and their owners don't let their dogs poop on the beach!

We had spent so much time in Monterey and Carmel that we found we were running out of time, so decided against driving down the Big Sur :-(  That will have to wait for another time.

Instead we set off towards Yosemite, stopping for dinner on the way and to get the children in their pjs.  After dinner at Mimi's Cafe they fell asleep so the drive to our little motel was easy.  The motel was a very typical American motel by the side of the road, but it was clean and cheap so we were happy :-)
