I have always had a wish to visit Santa in Lapland and over Christmas and New Year, this was to finally come true!

We started to plan this trip over two years ago, well before we knew that we would be leaving for New Zealand.  In fact, when we first knew that we were going, we thought that we were going to have to put off our departure date so that we could fit in this trip first!!  That was very wishful thinking!!

The cabin, we found from a website, Lucy and Dan helped to choose it from the photos displayed on the site.  We then finally booked the flights after many problems a year and a half later!  Trying to get flights that tied in with the cabin dates was a nightmare.

Eventually, however, it was all sorted and Christmas 2008 was spent in a beautiful log cabin surrounded by snow and trees.  It was the most amazing place - so very magical.

The first day was spent visiting Santa at the Artic Circle and playing on an ice slide with his elf helpers.  We then had a two hour drive to the cabin.  That in itself was an experience trying to find the place.  We had directions, however, we found them VERY difficult to follow and kept driving up and down this track through the snow laden forests!

The next day was spent on snow mobiles and husky sledges.  We spent several hours on snow mobiles, crossing over frozen lakes, going up and down hills, until we finally reached the husky farm.  Here we had the thrill of driving sledges through the trees.  Dan and Lucy held on very tightly and squealed with excitement.  It was a very long and tiring day, but very well worth it.

The next day was spent at a reindeer farm, where we got to learn about the reindeer customs as well as feeding reindeer calves and learning how to drive a reindeer sledge.  The ride was much slower than the huskies but it was still great fun.  We even got to meet one of Santa's special reindeer, who was resting after a very hectic 24 hours of rushing around the world, racing through the skies.

Over the next few days we got to spend time in Rukka, playing in the ice maze, in the shops and sledging.  We also visited an ice bar where 4 hot chocolates cost us a whopping 24!!!  (Two of the hot chocolates had a shot of spirit in them but still............!)

We also spent many happy hours sledging on the tracks around the cabin,  in daylight and in the dark.  Dan wasn't too keen on this at first, but after the first night, he was well away, enjoying all the fun.

During our time in Lapland we experienced a heavy snow storm, and unfortunately for us, we were racing through the Artic Circle towards a cave deep in a mountain where we all met Santa's elves.  It was quite a scarey trip, however, it was well worth it.  Lucy and Dan got to see the elf show, decorate ginger biscuits, make Santa's out of mini logs as well as visit the toy workshops by train.  By the time we left the mountain to the sound of an elf playing a flute, the wind was howling and the snow was coming down very quickly.  It was so dark, Lucy didn't see the door and walked straight into the glass, which gave her a nose bleed.

The journey back was very scarey and seemed to take for ever.  There were times when the snow was so blinding we couldn't see the road at all.  I have never been so glad to get back, there were times when I thought we were going to have to camp out at the side of the road until the snow had passed.

We had a fantastic time in Lapland and would recommend it to everyone. It was very expensive, particularly due to the strength of the Euro against the Pound, but was well worth it.  I just hope that on one of our visits back to the UK in the future we can experience the magic again.
