Where I stayed

And so we're at the end of our trip. We arrive into Bangkok after a reasonably good nights sleep on the train and drop our bags off at our guesthouse.  This time we’re staying at Khaosan Baan Thai, about ten minutes walk from Khao San Road. We have a lazy day in Bangkok as it’s hot, very hot and Bangkok is not a very pleasant place to be with traffic noise and fumes.  We venture back out when it’s cooler have some drinks by the river and then head to a Thai restaurant for dinner – exactly the same places we went when we were here 2 months ago.  But there is one new thing left to do before I leave Thailand and that’s try Samsun Whisky – the local spirit.  So we head to one of the street bars and make our way through some of the local liqueur.  It’s not unpleasant and goes down surprisingly well – not sure how whisky like it is, more like homemade rum.  Having consumed enough alcohol units we feel it’s time for the madness on Khao San Road.  We try another couple street bars and watch all the different characters pass by.  I still can’t get over the diversity of the street and how all types of people seem to congregate here.  It’s especially strange as there are few decent restaurants or bars left anymore.  Suddenly it’s 4.30am and it really is past our bedtime.  Here’s a little summary of our 354 days travelling:

Highlights (in no order as we couldn’t possibly decide)

-         Glacier climbing to the top of Mount Villaricca

Sunrise and trekking on Perito Moreno Glacier

The buzz of Rio De Janeiro

         Bolivian salt flat tour

         Trekking the Inca Trail

         Beaches in Tayrona Colombia

         Trying out Mexcian food

         Yosemite National Park

         Abel Tasman trek, New Zealand

Travelling along the Great Ocean Road

Wine and walks in Waiheke Island

Relaxing and hiking in Wanaka, New Zealand

Cooking up a storm in Hoi An

         Exploring the countryside in Laos

Getting up close to elephants in Thailand

Our favourite country award goes to:

Argentina – for amazing steak, wine and variety of scenery from mountains to desert to tango dancing in Buenos Aires.  Plus a good set up for backpackers with friendly hostels and lots of people to meet.

Best hostels - New Zealand

Worst hostels – Australia

Things we won’t miss about travelling

Packing, unpacking and carrying the backpacks

The dirt and smells of the street

Trying to work out where is best to leave your valuables – risk taking them with you or risk leaving them at the hostel

         Long, long, uncomfortable bus rides

Haggling over prices – give me a fixed price any day!

Although these points already seem like minor issues to see what we’ve seen over the past 12 months!
