Where I stayed
We stay at Hostel Roma which is a fairly basic old hotel but it's clean and good enough for a one night stopover. We try to have a walk around at night but as we are unsure of the area and the local past time seems to be getting drunk by 8pm we end up eating fast food in a shopping centre.
Next day is an early start on our tourist train, we bought the cheap seats as didn’t see the point in paying extra for a Portuguese speaking guide and it turns out we have a whole carriage to ourselves apart from the mountain rescue crew heading to work
Then the journey starts to get more interesting as we reach the rainforest and pass through and over large gorges, with stunning views of the forest, waterfalls and mountains. I even think I see the tail end of a panther/puma – not sure which, a bigger than average black cat – Jonny wasn’t quick enough to see it so I’m not sure he quite believes me....He maintains is was a monkey...
I think the train conductor feels a bit sorry for us as he comes to point out the main sites and tells us the names of things – the only one I can remember is the blue mountains as that’s where the mountain rescue team got off.
We arrive in Morretes just before lunch time which is a small colonial village surrounded by lush, green mountains and is very picturesque. We take a walk along the river before our main activity of the day – lunch. We head to lunch spot on the river called Madalozo for the local speciality called barreado – a meat stew served with rice, we weren’t quite prepared for what arrived. A salad, bread, mussels, bread crumbed prawns, fish croquettes, battered fish fillets, more prawns this time in a sauce, deep fried banana stuffed with meat, followed by the stew itself with rice and beans. An amazing feast and very entertaining waiters made a great day out. Back to Curitiba to pass the time before our overnight bus to Rio de Janeiro – arriving in Rio for a well deserved Saturday night out!
