After a long journey from London (via New York and Toronto and about 36 hours) it was great to be in Santiago. Ensuring we beat any jet lag we went straight to the central district, from the bohemian Barrio Brasil where the Don Santiago Hostel is located. Within the central district we visited the key sites including the main square, parliament buildings and local fish market...Pisco Sour (Pisco is the local liquer, kind of rum like mixed with lemon) Night at the hostel nicely rounded off Day 1 of the big trip.

Fully refreshed, Day 2 started at the newly opened Human Rights Museum - a difficult visit but extremely insightful to give a background to Chile's history during the Pinochet years.  A bit more wandering round the city, including a couple of the viewpoints in town which gave us an amazing view and showed the scale of the city.  Unfortunately most of the time the view of the Andes were mostly covered by cloud (possibly smog) so only on the last day did we get the full Santiago panoramic view.

A highlight had to be our evening spent with our friend Sergio - we hit the west end of Santiago for some amazing Chilean steak and wine... before visiting the local Fire Station where Sergio volunteers. After a quick tour of the engines and the best fancy dress costume ever, involving more pisco but this time with coke (the off duty side of the fire service!)

Sorry to leave after 3 days in Santiago but it is off to Pucon where the Chilean Lake District awaits... if we can ever survive the Bus Terminal and find the bus we are meant to spending the next 11 hours on...
