Where I stayed

I am a little tired of the bike at this point, and as Switzerland is ridiculously expensive, I just took a train through most of it. I rode into Switzerland, caught a train, landed in Zurich, and crossed the Rhine into Germany. Three countries in one day…

I have found something in Germany that I have seen nowhere else in my travels…peanut butter!! For some reason, peanut butter is an American thing. Sure, they have Nutella, but the ingredients for that are sugar, vegetable oil, then hazelnuts (12%). So, really, it is just nut-flavored, oily sugar.

It didn't take me long to decide I like Germany. Everything is neat and orderly. Most importantly, many people speak English and are friendly…yeah, it’s just a little thing, but really, come on, France, get your act together.

A little disappointed with the Black Forest (where are the black trees!!), but still, not so bad for a hilly mass of trees. They also have lakes, now isn’t that something…I decided to stay at one for a week, too. Maybe my disinterest with anything bike-related might have had something to do with this, who knows?

I soon discovered I am near the American base region of Germany. Somehow, it isn’t too hard to notice the American GI in a campground…how is it that a person with a Midwestern accent is in another country? Ohhh…

Freiburg is the largest city in the Black Forest, but I was rather impressed. It is a college town, but I’m quite sure there is more going on there than Davis and Sacramento combined. They also ride bicycles, so sorry Davis, you don’t have them there either. For some reason, I also find the Black Forest preferable to Real America the Central Valley…
