Athens International isn't exactly in the city, and it was a twenty mile ride from the hostel. The last couple miles into the airport, the only road is the freeway. I don’t know why they do this, but I guess it doesn’t matter as long as I don’t get fined.

Breaking down the bike and trailer, packing and wrapping them, took me a little over an hour. I packaged the bike in much the same way as I did when flying to London. I purchased some thick, clear plastic sheeting from a paint store and used this as a bike bag with the help of a little duct tape. A sweater I found on the side of the road was all I used for padding. The idea is that the baggage handlers won’t damage it if they see what it is.

Though I was afraid I would go over the 20kg baggage limit, I was well under at 16kg. It seems all that discarding I’ve done since London has allowed me to drop more than half my weight in luggage. Strangely, all the food shops were before security. Fortunately, the line at security wasn’t long, so I was able to manage with the eating and making my flight thing. There was no customs at the Milan airport, so I guess the only stamp I will ever have in my passport is the one from London. Not that I care, for it actually makes it easy to stay in Europe as long as I wish.

The Milan-Malpensa airport is actually some 30 miles from Milan, and I’ve no intention of ever going into the city. I have had enough of big cities for now, so I’m off to lakes and mountains for a couple weeks. For accommodation that night, I headed to a campground at the southern end of Lake Maggiore. It was a mere 10 miles from the airport. After assembling the bike, I went straight there, marking the end of a day of 30 miles on the bike and 1000 miles in the air.
