Where I stayed

I am staying in a hostel dorm room in Reims for 3 nights. This is the longest I have stayed in one place up to now, but I am having trouble with my computer (won't play video) and needed to fix it as well as see the town. Reims has the largest cathedral in France, so methinks it's worth a little visit.

I was getting a little lonely not having anybody to talk to (the French people I have met before Reims don't speak English well enough to have a conversation), so I asked the hostel clerk to put me in a room with some English speakers. That worked out well, with one roommate being an Australian on a 12-month tour of the world and another roommate a 22 year old French guy from Marseille who spoke decent English and knew people in Reims. I went out on the town with him that Saturday night. It turned out to be a good adventure, as I ended up hanging out with a group of 20 year olds who spoke pretty good English. I think they were the geek crowd, but they were cool guys. We hung out at a friend's apartment and talked, drank beer, and smoked a little hashish. A great French experience! Of course, I didn't get back to the hostel until 4 am, and got a little lost before I did.

The next day was mostly just overcast, so I went out with the Marseille roommate and saw the cathedral and an old Roman gate. I was a bit hungover from the night before and I think all my cycling has removed any tolerance to alcohol I once had :)

I think I wasted a whole day trying to fix my computer, and after making the problem worse (now my screen would go black after logging in, I reinstalled Windows. Not something you want to do on the road, but luckily I was prepared. Unfortunately, it somehow didn't fix all the problems, but I can at least play video now!

Gotta love the geeks! And there's no crime in hanging in a place for a few days--you get to know the culture! Do you believe me yet about the smells and sounds being different?

Are you getting "cathedral fatigue" yet? In Japan it was the shrines. Over and over and...oh gawd, not another shrine.

Yes, the geeks are somewhat on my wavelength. As for the cathedrals, I haven't gotten to the point where I am tired of seeing another. The large ones always seem to put me in awe of the ability of humans to make buildings like these.
