Today was going to be the most challenging driving so far. The roads weren´t high this time, it was just windy gravel ripio for most of the 190km from Cachi to Cafayate. After a few photos around Cachi and a quick look in the museum, we left around 11.30am. We had a stop for lunch in Molinos, and arrived in Cafayate around 5.30.

The road was worse than bad. Our poor VW Gol took a hammering. A lot of the road had this little ridges in it, which would make the whole car judder, sometimes so much the gear would pop out into neutral. Every bone joint was taking a hit too. The scenery again was spectacular, although not as high as before. Along the road there was the odd little house or village. A total different world to Buenos Aires. Here the people have very little.

With 30km to go, we were at last on paved road. Cafayate is a wine making area, so get´s a sunny climate all year round. Our drive was rewarded with the nicest hotel so far, and probably one that will be hard to beat. Hotel Killa (Keelya) is a former colonial tyle house, with lovely gardens in the court yard, leading to various rooms. We were given the best room in the house, with great views of the mountains and church. Inside, the room was spectacular. The biggest bed we´ve ever seen, and natural materials such as wood and stone gave the room such a unique finish.

Went out to a restaurant for some steak and a taste of the local wine. It is incredibly cheap here for us brits, as the exchange rate is really good. Our 2 steak meals, a small bottle of wine and a bottle of water cost about 9GBP. This would have cost loads more back home.

Overall, Cafayate was a nice town, and we wish we had another night here.
