DAY 8 - Thursday 25t" May 2002 (Fort William (Glen Nevis)).
Tried to find somewhere in Glen Nevis that would do breakfast, but doesn't seem to be a popular idea, so have to head into Fort William. No buses or taxis, and guess what, its raining again. Walked along the main road trying to hitch a lift. Too many of us though, and Sinead and Ronan, lagging behind at the back, were the only ones who were successful. They somehow managed to get a lift in a minibus, but driver wouldn't stop to pick the rest of us up - which is just mean.....
A little soggy again by time got to Fort William - and the official end of the WHW (there has to be some satisfaction in actually having walked over the finish line - doesn't there). Had breakfast in the cafe in the visitors center. Then wandered around trying on tartan caps with red wigs - all very authentic.
Not sure what going to do with the day. Still raining and there is a definite shortage of public transport. Discovered that there is a distillery in town so started walking off that way. Had to shelter in a bus stop as really chucking it down, and whilst there the one taxi which had gone ahead with Sinead, Ronan and Eli, stopped and let Eli off. The distillery is shut, so going to go bowling in the center of town.
Obviously had to have some beer whilst waited for bowling lanes, and then had competition between boys and girls. Using complicated mathematical system managed to get worse in second game so lost badly - not that the boys ever mentioned it again or anything.
Sun came out and stopped raining, so walked into the old part of town and then along the road by the loch and down on the beach. Busy. Then found a pub with back window looking out over the water. Jon got 90 shillings in a bottle, which Ronan was very jealous over when he realised he still just had 80s.
Stayed in town and had Indian for dinner. For some reason they put us upstairs by ourselves in this tiny room. We were obviously having too much fun or something as after a while this poor woman had to come upstairs and stand in the doorway and watch us. Kind of inhibiting, so started asking her for fresh drinks, one at a time just to get a bit of privacy. Meal was good though, and they let us come downstairs for coffee.
So all (except Alan and Eli) stopped off for a final whisky in pub, then taxi back to Glen Nevis.
