I arrived in Santiago on the 25th February, yes I really can`t believe it`s been over a month since I left Boston. First things first, getting to a hostel. I was a bit concerned as my Spanish was none existent, but it`s amazing how with a bit of sign language, making an arse of yourself trying to pronounce word in Spanish and pointing at names in books you can make progress.
I completed a quick whistle stop tour of Santiago, fighting my way through the smog and managed to book myself a bus the following day down to the coast to a place called Puerto Montt, followed by a plane the day after to Punta Arenas, right down on the southern tip of mainland Patagonia. After the triumphs of getting a place to stay and booking onward transport for the next two days I met a couple of German guys and decided it was time to go out and let Chile know I`d arrived! Well to cut a long story short a few beers that night turned into a mammoth session. As you can imagine my 6.30 wake up call and my 16 hour bus ride through some beautiful Chilean countryside weren't quite as enjoyable as they should have been.
