We took the bus to Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary; it left from Sandakan Hotel at 9:30 stopping at Sepilok on the way. We picked up Sandy and Jess there; they were on an 18-month trip, I was of course insanely jealous :-) They had a nice camera lens so we were instant buddies! As for the Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, I can’t say enough good things about this place, if you like watching wildlife this is a top spot to go!
This place was a Palm Tree plantation, but the owner had saved some of the forest and mangroves for his Eco tourism experiment
We were taken straight to the viewing platform (B) for the first feeding. It had lots of room and lots of Proboscis, long tailed Macaques and no so many people. A much more pleasant experience that Sepilok in that regard. From here we were taken back to the accommodation. Great rooms located on stilts right in the middle of the mangroves!
There was a large water monitor walking around at lunch and then it was off to Platform A. More Proboscis although there was no too much shade at the platform and it was a little steamy to say the least! Lots more Proboscis nice and close. On the way out we saw a 30cm mudskipper in the mangroves. Now for someone who comes from Darwin where the mudskippers are about 4cm long that was pretty large!
Next it was straight back to Platform B. Not too sure where they had been all morning but the place was mobbed with the dark morph Silver Leaf Monkeys, all hanging out on the observation deck and close enough to touch! I had a few tugging wars with them by holding out my hand and them grabbing it.
There were also a couple of Oriental Pied Hornbills hanging out on the trees close by. They fed these guys later, although the macaques stole most of their bananas before they could get them!
On our trip back to the lodge there was a little baby otter that was been rescues by some of the park staff
We were the only people at din dins, there were a lot of mossies around especially from 6:45 to 7:15, well it was a mangrove swamp! I’ll end by mentioning again, great place, I can’t say enough good things about it, we had a great day.
Brand new Bornean birds we was at the Proboscis Sanctuary were
