Alcatraz Island is a national park. You get there on one of the ferries which leaves pier 31 every half an hour. We were on the 'early bird' ferry to get there before the hoards. We did the audio tour of the prison house - walking around with our head phones on like a bunch of zombies.
The tour was really interesting and featured the voices of some of the prison wardens and old inmates. It was a bit grim walking around the tiny cells but it's reputation as a prison seemed far worse than the reality. The inmates were treated well as long as they behaved and the food had to be prepared to strict standards so they got some pretty good scran!
The tour took us the best part of the morning so after lunch we hired some bikes and biked the bridge. There is a bike path along the bay and over the bridge with several lookout points along the way so you can see the bridge from every angle. The bridge is pretty amazing structure. It's busy too. Packed with tourists all biking, skating or strolling across. The views from the bridge are breathtaking. For those who climb the bridge for a different purpose there are samaritan phones every hundred yards incase you feel the urge to jump!
