We flew into Tahiti, but caught the boat straight to Moorea cos the beaches are better there! Bit of a downer on the first day, fell asleep on the beach and got very burnt! Where we were staying was beautiful - clear water, white sands, no people! Was so ridiculously expensive - more expensive than London! There is a 70% tax on everything! After 5 days of doing nothing but reading and swimming, we caught the boat back to Tahiti! We were staying with Mairi's friends, Vehi and Francois in the capital, Papeete, they were so lovely, and made us feel so at home! They live in a lovely, big wooden house, which has a really oriental feel to it! On the first day, we just walked around Papeete which is very small, but so busy, with loads of people and cars - big difference from Moorea! On the second day we took a Safari tour into the middle of Tahiti! We saw waterfalls, swam in the pools at the bottom of the waterfalls and in natural lakes! Also saw volcanos and where sacrifices used to take place - the last one was down at the start of the 20th Century
Fay on the waterfall
! We learnt how they used trees to communicate between tribes and how they used plants etc to do their tribal make up! Tahiti is the best place because there are NO snakes - not even in the water! They're too far from the continent so they only really have pigs and goats - eveywhere should be like that!! In the evening, we went to Vehi's family home! It was their family home where 3 generations of family have lived! There were loads of aunties, uncles and cousins and they all made us feel so welcome! Had really nice food, loads of traditional Tahitian food, was delicious! Had such a fun night, and they said had we been staying longer they could have shown us so much more of Tahiti and all of the other islands - oh well, maybe next time.........
