I also went to a football match, Flamengo Vs Corthians. The fans are crazy and were singing and jumping around from walking into the ground to walking back out again. The crowd wasnt that big as both teams were mid table, and the stadium holds 100,000, but was still a good atmosphere.
Rio - What a great first stop. Rio lived upto all expectations. Massive contrasts of the wealthy and poor. Spent 4 days here. First couple of days were spent just getting used to the heat and sun, trying not to stand out too much with the white English skin and making sure I didnīt lose my stuff. Rio has a bit of a reputation for crime and luckily I didnt experience this, but met lots of people that did, including being robbed by the Police! The beach is much of the focus in Rio, so spent the first couple of days sleeping off the jet lag and hangovers. I stayed in the Ipanema area, which is just round from Cocabana, but a lot less dodgey. Below picture shows the beach a couple of blocks from where I stayed and a picture of one of Rios favellas, where a lot of the poorer people live. My last two days had a little bit more activity. I visited sugar loaf mountain, Christ the Redeamer and the nearby National Park. All these give good views over Rio as you can see in the below photographs.
