Of course we've been asked what we will see and do. Sometimes I think I know, sometimes I'm not so sure. Up until the last few days, the living room has pretty much looked like Hurricane Liz blew through. It has been decorated with hastily sketched notes, well-used guide books, maps of all shapes and sizes, empty coffee mugs, and half-prepared itineraries. Every now and then there would be a rustling of the paper and Liz would emerge like a mad scientist who had just added another compound to her version of Turkish chemistry. Amazing really. For now, I will tell you that we will be covering a fair amount of ground from Istanbul in the west, all the way out to Dogubayazit in the east, and many points north, south, and in between
I have been responsible for arranging flights and the first few night's accommodation. I think I got the easy job. I found a great bargain on our air tickets by the way. The catch is we are flying on Air India on the first leg of the trip to Frankfurt and then switching to Lufthansa from Frankfurt to Istanbul. Lufthansa gives us little pause for concern. Air India? Well, that's another story. Oh, it's not safety that concerns us. It's the fact that they are prone to cancellation from time to time and the customer service is supposedly, well, not much customer and even less service. I just think back to our Indian bus rides a few years ago. I imagine it to be the same, but this time the bus has 4 engines strapped to it and it's going 500 mph. What a thought...
We hope you hang in there with us for this journey. If you'd like to, all you need to do is eagerly sit at your computer waiting for updates like this one to show up in your email in-box. If you you'd rather not, just reply to this update telling us to take you off the list. We promise we won't have our feelings hurt. And, if you'd like to share this with someone else, send them this link. They can sign up for updates too!
The next entry will be made 5,483 miles from here. (That would be 8,823 km for those of you in countries using the metric system.) We promise that plenty of pictures will arrive with future entries. In the meantime, check out this link if you are unfamiliar with the great country of Turkey.
Until next time,
Liz and Jon
