My tho, also on the Mekong Delta
Entry 25 of 73 | show all | print this entry |
Another busy day after all of yesterday's traveling but I suppose that's the nature of the game. We woke around 5am to catch the sunrise on the Mekong with our new friend Grace, the driver took us through small canals and floating markets where we sampled our first Asian breakfast, rice and pork which happened to look like cuts of bacon.
Our driver stop down a canal and we followed her to through and narrow alley before reaching a little pig farm and noodle making establishment. We watched as they went through the process of cooking the rice noodle and then shredding it into noddle pieces and played with the piglets who are being fed up to later become dinner.
Soon enough both Jon and Grace fell asleep on this boat trip which cost $8 each and although not particularly worth it I was determined to get my moneys worth.
The trip ended and are bus for My Tho conveniently picked us up from the guest-house, we traveled through some small but beautiful villages which Daniella slept through completely before reaching our destination My Tho, which we had some difficulty pronouncing seeing that we are now back in a tonal speaking country (Cambodia wasn't).
The town was small and not used to foreigners walking though at all, many not speaking much English we felt some what frustrated seeing how the majority of Asia is geared up for tourists. A sign of whats to come in China. Our last stop on the Mekong for the rest of our journey we decided to visit a town called Ben Tre which is an island on the Mekong where they famously make coconut candy.
We took a public ferry over not with out being ripped off by our moto driver who tried to charge us a dollar each for taking us 200 meters to a pier. The cheek. I practically threw 5000 dong at him in fury and walked on the ferry. Our first experience in Vietnam of locals taking real advantage. Ben Tre was a lovely little atmospheric town with lost of smiley faces and young children.
We headed back to the main land just after dark and tucked into a well deserved bed. We have said our goodbyes to the Mekong Delta until Tibet, we hope regarding the local situation there now this may be our last of the Mekong. The big smoke next... Saigon here we come.
