Leiden
Entry 8 of 13 | show all | print this entry |
Yesterday, Wednesday, June 30th, made a last minute decision to go to Leiden. This is the site of the oldest university in Holland. Started off doing another walking tour by going to The National Museum of Ethnology. This museum had ethnically oriented displays of the peoples of the various parts of the world, ie, Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, South America and the Arctic. Spent a few hours here. Then rested while taking a canal trip around Leiden. Got pictures. Mom decided we should see the Pilgrim Archives. Good choice. As you may know, the Pilgrims sailed to Leiden prior to embarking for the new world. There is quite a bit of history here regarding the Pilgrims. We discovered there was also a Pilgrim Museum here. So naturally we went. Surprise of all surprises, we met and talked with a Dr. Jeremy Bangs who has done extensive study and writing about the Pilgrims and also had extensive knowledge about Hingham, Scituate and surrounding territory. In his opinion, the most important town of the very early settlement days was Scituate, not Plymouth. Imagine, coming 3000 miles across the Atlantic to discover a man making a life's study of the Pilgrims. He also used to be the curator at the Plimouth Plantation. I'm sure you will have many questions, but the answers are too extensive to include here. We'll talk when we get home. Today is wash day and get ready to travel day. Tomorrow we are off to Brugge, Belgium.

Who would have thought it?!! (reply) Jul 1, 2005 17:45 EST by travelpod
Is that 'six degrees of separation' in Leiden?? Can't believe you found some one who knew about Hingham and is a 'pilgrim' expert. Didn't know that there was such a thing.... It sounds like you are balancing your trip with walking and riding either on the canals or the trains. It sounds like a wonderful trip, can't wait for the full story!
On to Belgium....

But it still is strange to find out how small. I'd love to cruise those canals too - I hope you take lots of pictures with you guys in them!
We finally got some rain yesterday. Real world class thuderstorms rolled through and hit us several times yesterday. I hope they make an appearance today as well...we need the rain. Of course, the storms delayed our landscaping, but softened the ground u... show all
