Baltic Sea
Entry 4 of 13 | show all | print this entry |
I skipped a day. We're having such a good time that it's not always possible to write. Ah well, such is the life of a World Traveler. Thursday we drove from Norderstedt to Scharbeurtz, a resort area on the Baltic. Since this is not yet the high vacation time in Europe, there were no crowds. The weather here has been unseasonably warm. This day it was in the mid 80's. I thought we would come to Germany to get a rest from the heat but instead, we brought it with us. We had a nice walk from Scharbeurtz to Timmendorf where we had some great Cod. It's called Dorsch locally. On the way back we stopped off at an Italian ice cream shop. As you might suspect, I was in heaven. Mom had a good time too. Riding in a car here is an experience in itself. If you think I am an erratic driver, don't ride with Erik. He's somewhat jerky and thinks nothing of traveling at 100mph plus on the Autobahn. Mom doesn't look at the speedometer. In case you can't tell, we are having a wonderful time.
Since I missed writing on Thursday, I'll continue on with our escapades from yesterday which was Friday. In the morning, Jen and Barbara relaxed at home while Erik and I went to the market. It's interesting wandering around the stores here. I recall from my past times in Germany that the market places used to be very small with a limited array of goods. Now, however, there is little difference in what you would find in American stores. The prices seem to be similar although all are now in Euros. One thing that is substantially different is the variety of meats, cheeses and breads available. All of excellent quality. It goes without saying that the beer is first rate. In the evening, it was party time. We were invited to a party at a friend's house. We went there at about 7pm and did not leave until 11pm. The food was great and company outstanding. Their names are Horst and Bärbel. It seems that Horst and Erik go to the same English classes at the local school. Their English is good. Much better than my German which is non-existent by comparison. Very lovely people, always ready to laugh and with a great sense of humor. In case I forget to mention it, daylight hours here are something quite different for us. The sun starts to come up at 4am and it's full light by 5am. In the evening it is still full light at 9pm and it's not really dark until 11pm. These are long days. To answer a question you all may have, YES, were are taking pictures which you will see upon our return. The itinerary for today is another party. Boy are we party animals!! This time it's a 70th birthday party for a friend. That's it for now. Cheers Gang.
