Today we were in Mammoth a town in California! The town atmosphere was chilled, laidback and somwhere you could imagine "dudes" and "chicks" hanging out. This could come from the fact Mammoth is one of Californias biggest skiing districts. Obviously whilst we were here its off season so there is no snow but instead greens and a cold wind. Instead of skiiing grown men and women wereprancing around on bmx bikes through the mammoth hills. The general vibe of the town was skater but wthout the snow this month. Today was the first time since arriving jumpers were needed by us all and the cablecart was off due to lightnening which struck during the day!!! We had a beautiful lunch in a local cafe and then headed up mammoth mountain to the Devils postpile and the rainbow falls. In order to get up the mountain we had to get a bus upto the visitors cenntre. This involved standing in a queue of mostly men and some women all in full head to toe bmx bike gear. They were all bumping their bikes up and down and sharing bike stories whilst momo/schmidt sat on looking on. Ive never seen so many grown men psycing eachother up,banging bike chains up and down and basically thinking they looked super macho in their biking glory. I personally think it was all for show and infact some just liked wearing all the gear but couldnt actually cycle!! Funny thing is Natalie and I both thought going biking would be fun, obviously before we joined the Q, but the sort of biking we had in mind was having a tingaling bell and basket not a bmx, shinpads and  a beasting helmet!
Once at the start of our trail we decided a simple walk round to the Devils postpile and rainbowfalls would be a good idea However being us we shoulda known a simple walk is never simple. We made it to the devils postpile with ease and were taken aback that volcanic activity could shape the rocks in the way in which it has. It was a great view! Then without consulting a map we decided to walk round to the raibow falls. The fountain was beaut and well worth the sore feet hike. However rule nmber 1 of being up a mountain...always read the map! We thought this would be a short walk through the forest but no no no this walk was miles and miles long and later we realised it was an advanced hiking route! So with no water and in a forest/mountain full of bears and deer and not knowing when the last bus home from the mountain was we began to power walk uphill towards the bus stop which yip we had no cue really where it was!. We bumped into some deer and chipmuncks on our way however natalie and I both felt on our route round we were being watched by some form of wildlife...bear cat or bird we do not know! .We powerwalked uphill all the way back miles and miles to eventually and luckily meet the 2nd last bus home of the night. I think we learned the following hinking lessons today:
Read the map
Know when the last bus home is
Pack bear pepper spray for bear attacks and
Never hike the expert trails in primark shoes!

Were now in our new hotel....thats 3new hotels in as many nights!!
