After lounging around all night and gorging myself on the buffet breakfast the next day (including stocking up my backpack for lunch!), I headed off to do the Sound of Music Tour, which was suitably cheesy. We saw the Mirabell Gardens, where Maria and the children played, the church where Maria was married, and much more. Was nice to get out and see the gorgeous lakes and mountains of Austria (and to sing along to the soundtrack, lets be honest).
The next day I walked up the Salzburg fortress (did you know salzburg means salt city because of all the salt deposits around it? neither did I), and got a view of the gorgeous city
I then met up with Nadia, a girl I met in Cesky Krumlov and we hired bikes for the day. Haven't been on a bike, apart from in the gym, for many years, but I found I picked it up pretty easily, like riding a bike, you know....
Anyway, we biked out to this crazy palace called Hellbrun (sp?), which a crazy noble had built in the 16century to contain trick fountains everywhere. So when his esteemed guests came to visit, they'd get soaked walking around the gardens. He even installed them into the seats of his dining table (except for his place of course) and when they were all sitting down to lunch, would turn them on. And, as you weren't allowed to stand before him, the noble, they all had to suffer until he turned them off. The tour was fun and I got caught by the fountains numerous times.
Then we headed off to a massive beer hall that night and drank litres of czech beer with crazy austrians in leiderhosen all night...good times, good company, good beer.
