Simple breakfast was more than enough for us and we embarked on our journey. Franz Josef glacier was located only few minutes from the place where we stayed.
Rain was slowing down and till we arrived to the valley the glacier showed up in its full beauty. We could choose from few walks, but with did the one which took us the closest to the glacier. We were walking slowly and enjoying the beauty all around us. Water from waterfalls was flowing from everywhere along the valley. We walked along a dark grey river all the way through a green valley where the lush forests turned into black rocks and with the fog around the mountains everything looked very surreal
Even if it was raining it stopped after a while and we had our rain gear on so it was not such a big deal. When we finally arrived at the glacier base we were totally taken by the view. We took as many photos as it was possible. After rather a long while we decided to go back to the car park and drove to the Fox glacier.
The heavy rain started once again however we again were praying and our prayers were answered, from whatever reason the sky was again relatively clear. The walk was not that easy as it was to the Franz Josef, so our lazy asses had bit of exercise - crossing a small creek and climbing up a hill but we were rewarded by the views of the beautiful valley and the blue glacier. When you will be in New Zealand you cannot miss these 2 highlights.
Again we were lucky for taking pictures and it did not rain at all. We went back to the car and we even have not noticed that we already had spent 5 hours on the road. We ended the day by buying a bottle of local wine and the next day we woke up early because we were travelling further up north,
