The Ojibwe call Lake Superior "gichigami" or "big water".  It is the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area and the third largest in the world by volume.  It is also the site of many shipwrecks, including the Edmund Fitzgerald.

The trip plan was fairly intense: Sault Saint Marie on Friday night, Thunder Bay, Ontario on Saturday night, Marquette, MI  on Sunday and then back to Detroit Monday afternoon.  Total distance approx, 1700 miles.

I left my home near Detroit just before 3 PM to meet my riding buddy Peter in Howell, MI at the intersection of US-23 and M-59, a distance of about 40 miles.  From there we would ride together to Sault Saint Marie, hopefully beating most of the holiday traffic heading up north.
