After leaving the state archives in Augusta, I headed east for Belfast, ME in order to pick up US-1 and head up the Maine coast into Calais.  The weather had picked up, it was a little chilly but sunny and bright and there was very little traffic on the Maine backroads.

I rolled into Belfast, ME about 1:30 PM.  I could tell right away that I was near the ocean...the town had that feeling, that feeling you get when you know there is big water nearby but you can't see it just yet.  Maybe it is the way towns and cities on the water are laid out, sprawled only in one direction, or maybe it is the smell, I don't know, but I can always tell when I am in a town or city near a river, lake or ocean vs one that isn't.

The town looked exactly like I expected a New England harbor town to look.  I meandered my way down towards the water, looking for someplace I could park and take a break for awhile before finding some food.  I found exactly what I wanted, a small park right on the water next to the Belfast Boathouse with a couple benches, perfect for some downtime.

I parked and grabbed the camera, snapping a few shots before I sat down with some water to recharge a bit. It was a little windy and the water was a little choppy.  I sat in the sun for about 20 minutes, enjoying the view and the smell of the water, then decided it was time for lunch. I rode back along Front Street, wondering if all towns on the water call the road along the water "Front Street" until I found a small bar called the Lookout.  It was right out of a postcard, sitting there next to an actual boatyard where guys were repairing boats. I went in, sat at the bar, and ordered the "Lookout Burger" and something to drink.

Feeling good after lunch and wanting to get going, I got back on the bike and headed out of Belfast to US-1 for the ride up the coast to Calais.
