Week Four
Entry 4 of 4 | show all | print this entry |
SUNDAY We left at 9:00 am to travel by bus & subway to another part of the city where we would meet at Laurie's house. Unfortunately, it was pouring rain and pretty cold that morning, but we made it safely to her beautiful home. We had church there, and then they were kind enough to cater lunch for us all! It was wonderful to sit and chat with Laurie, telling her about my project and learning bits and pieces about my grandmother. She and her husband have a wonderful home, and it was so loving and gracious for them to open their doors to host us.
The afternoon was officially free, so I set off with Richard and Megan to the Silk Market. We each had a couple of things in mind that we were looking to purchase, and what is more fun than bargaining??? Okay, a LOT of things, but this was a nice activity for a rainy day. We returned about 7:00 pm, and Megan and I curled up with our noodles and watched some of the DVDs we'd gotten earlier.
MONDAY Language class and lunch. Free afternoon. I did nothing but watch DVDs, and it was glorious.
TUESDAY Language class and lunch. Free afternoon. Alyson, Stacey, Megan, and I jumped on the subway and went to XIDAN. This is a popular place for the Chinese to do their shopping. There is a market where you can bargain for items as well as a classy department store. We checked out both. Stacey and I found skirts at the market, and it's always fun to look in department stores! Afterwards, Megan and I headed back to the Silk Market so she could get a sweatshirt she didn't buy on Sunday but had been daydreaming about ever since. There, we happened to meet up with Kenny and Wes, and we joined them for dinner.
WEDNESDAY Tai chi (with music this time!), language class and lunch. Calligraphy from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. We learned a poem with 20 characters! Then we used the book John gave us to try some new words. Our instructor is very nice and is always watching when you do it wrong :) That's okay because it's nice to watch how it's supposed to be done! It's difficult because we haven't been learning the characters - only pinyin - so it is hard for us to write in the correct order. I think that is half of the battle, because if you don't get the order of the strokes right, your character looks a little.... sad.... :) Quick break & dinner before meeting at 5:45 for more Olympic training and then English Corner from 7:00 to 9:00. What a day!
