In the early morning we slept for a few hours outside Jacksonville, driving into the town about 0800 for breakfast on Beach Boulevard. We tried going South to find a swimming beach, without success, so turned around and went North, taking a ferry to the State Park, where we spent the day on the beach.  The sea was so warm, like a thermal bath.

In the afternoon we went into Jacksonville to enquire at the car rental companies if there were any cars that required delivery up in the New York area as our car had definitely seen better days (by this time the track rod ends were shot, which meant terrible and destructive vibrations were set up at any speed around 60 mph).  No such cars were available.  After eating we found a room at a motel on the beach, the Sandy Shores, for $10.  In the evening we took a walk on the pier, then went back to the motel to phone radio stations to see if they could find a car for us to take to the North.  The station WQ1K put out a message for us but there were no replies.  It seemed we were stuck with our old Chevy.

To console ourselves we went to a bar and drank a lot of beer.  Most of the beer was free – the barman was determined to get us drunk in revenge, apparently, for the time when the Royal Navy got him drunk in Naples, Italy.
