With just 4 hours sleep we drove out to Lake Mead, where the water was warm for swimming and there was great scenery. A guided tour of the Hoover Dam for 30 cents each was very good value for money, and inside the dam structure it was a comfortable escape from the searing heat outside.

At 1900 we started the drive across the desert, the very hot desert, for Los Angeles.  How we kept going is a bit of a mystery as we were all short on sleep, dead tired, and over-heated.  Ray was on chewing gum and John was on chicken soup: by these perhaps we arrived in Los Angeles without incident at 0300 the next morning.
