At Garden Creek we stopped for a well deserved cool off in the water cascading down through the rocks. It was a very refreshing rest stop.
At Indian Village, an abandoned settlement, we had to wait for a passing mule train: we envied the people sitting comfortably, relatively speaking, while the poor old mules did all the hard work.
Bob and Ray went on ahead, but stopped after an hour and a half to eat some rice, rest, and wait for John who had stopped to talk to some Texans on the trail.
After 8 hours of uphill walking and a final sprint to the top we were out of the canyon and back on the South Rim. We were pretty much all in. We had just sufficient energy to shower, eat, and fall asleep.
Walking into the Grand Canyon, sleeping under the stars next to the Colorado River, and then walking back up to the South Rim has remained as a truly great and unforgettable experience.
