Hitting The Road
Entry 3 of 9 | show all | print this entry |
(Columbus OH, June 23, 2006)-There's really no sense in pretending that I'm writing this as I go along. Actually, the dateline is phony, I'm a few days more than a month behind in my reportage and I'm writing from the Amtrak train now stalled on a sidetrack somewhere between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo, between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
But now it's already the next day and I'm in San Francisco, visiting with Jim Epstein in the Mission District of this great American city. I'm in an ideal location to catch up on my writing, and it's a good thing because I'm way behind. There are a dozen or more entries to write for this Travelogue, I've got to send off On The Road #18 to Dottie Oliver at the Little Rock Free Press, and I've got a Blues & Roots column, a review of the great new Fats Domino biography by Rick Coleman, and a review of the new Pin Stripe Brass Band record, I Wanna Go Back to New Orleans, from Carlo Ditta at Orleans Records to turn in to Tom Speed at Honest Tune magazine in Oxford, MS.
Naturally I'll attach them as they are completed, and I'll attach some of the US radio shows I've been doing to the appropriate Travelogue entries, and throw in whatever other tidbits I think you might like to see or hear from along the bardic path. Here's the road map now:

Okay, I'm finally off and running just as fast as I can. This trip is pretty much paying for itself with hopefully a little left over to take home to Holland in September, but if you feel moved to make a modest (or excessive!) donation to my Golden Bard Travel Fund, I'm asking for help in making my 65th birthday wish come true-that I can fly my daughter Sunny and my granddaughter Beyonce from Detroit to Amsterdam for the week of October 2nd to celebrate my birthday with me.
They've never been to Holland before, and this would be a big thrill for all three of us: I'll be 65, Sunny is 39 and B is 5. So we'll need two round-trip tickets from Detroit to Amsterdam and back, and as soon as I get a few minutes open I'll start looking up the fares. The sooner I can purchase them, the less they'll cost. So if you're able to help on a project like this, the three generations of Sinclairs will be deeply and eternally grateful for your generosity.
