MayDay at La Luz de Jesus

(Los Angeles, Tuesday, May 1, 2007)-I slept late on Monday morning and woke up beautifully rested with no external duties for the day, so I drove Margaret's car directly to the MuscleTone offices on Fairfax Blvd. and worked on my e-mail all afternoon. That night there was dinner with Michael Simmons & Fred Dewey in the Munz's 'hood, with the kind of thrilling literary and social conversation that's increasingly rare in the dummied-down US of A of today.
Tuesday began with a lunch date with my dear friend Mary Katherine Aldin on the Santa Monica pier near her offices at Folklore Productions. M-K is a leading American blues scholar and a fountain of knowledge about the music we love and the people who make it-always has been, always will be. We commiserated on the loss of our mutual pals Stevenson Palfi and Tad Jones in New Orleans and caught up on a lot of blues information.
Way down to the other end of town after that to the neighborhood of La Luz de Jesus, where Feral House/Process Media would be hosting the official GUITAR ARMY book release party that evening. First there was an elaborate photo shoot for Caroline Ryder's forthcoming story in BPM magazine, and then a tasty meal and even tastier conversation with Chad Brown, who was interviewing me for Helio magazine and had an amazing grounding in the ideas and practice of my era. Chad even drove me in his pickup truck by Art Pepper's pad in the hills while we smoked a big joint in preparation for dinner and our interview.
The book party was kicks too, with an audience full of old friends-Mick Farren, John Feins, Mark Groubert, Sirius & Julie, Mosley the Punk and a host of others, including Lenny Kaye, who had come to the store shopping for books with his daughter and stuck around for my reading from GUITAR ARMY. Our host and his staff were accommodating in the extreme and a good time was had by all.
With my promotional duties in Los Angeles wrestled to a standstill, I caught about 3 hours sleep and headed to the airport with Wayne & Margaret for my 7:00 am flight east. Thanks to Adam Parfrey and Jodi Wille for showing me such a great time, and to their publicists, Josh Mills and Tracy Blackburn, for putting everything into place. Now it's on to Detroit and a brief return to the scene of the crime.
