4/20 Dopecast with The Dopefiend at the 420 Cafe
Entry 25 of 40 | show all | print this entry |
First, a big shout out to the characters who will be gathering this evening at the Buzz Bar in downtown Detroit for the second annual 420 Party that's staged by Holice P. "Hollywood" Wood under my name and in my honor. I'm sorry not to be in the house this year but I think Adam Brook is going to represent me and show some video from his recent visit here in Amsterdam, including his footage of my two numbers with the Black Crowes at the Paradiso last month. Adam says the Crowes' keyboard ace Eddie Harsch is back in Detroit and playing with Jeff "Baby" Grand somewhere in Ferndale one night a week.
On the corrections tip, I forgot to say last time that you can see more about Pun Plamondon's book Lost from the Ottawa: The Story of the Way Back and his amazing range of current activities-Ottawa story-teller, author, lecturer, performer and wise man among the peoples-at the website James Semark designed for him:

4/20 in Amsterdam started out for me at the 420 Café, where I met the British podcaster The Dopefiend and his sidekick, Toker, for a special edition of their twisted little program, The Dopecast at Dopefiend.co.uk. We made one program together at The Dolphins on Tuesday afternoon, and we're hooking up again after the two high-level cannabis tourists from England have spent the past two days visiting and recording podshows at the Blue Velvet, The Dolphins, cutting a show on the go while walking around from one of the coffeeshops of Amsterdam to another: Abraxis, Amnesia, the Dampkring, de Rokerie, Homegrown Fantaseeds.
The thing that killed me is that they claimed to have been inspired by my radio show on Radio Free Amsterdam, listened to most of my shows and actually modeled their podcast on ours-although the Dope Fiend does a lot more talking than I do, and features much less music. But even the most cursory listen will reveal that he's every bit as far out of his mind as your present correspondent, and that's always good to hear from my point of view. I'll post the url for The Dopecast as soon as The Dopefiend sends it to me.
So Happy 420, everybody, I'm over and out for today. The first of my two appearances on The Dopecast, recorded at The Dolphins and the 420 Café this week, should be podcast Monday 4/24 at www.Dopefiend.co.uk, and I'm hoping we can add their show to the Radio Free Amsterdam lineup before long. I intend to post an entry before I leave for Italy on Sunday about this summer's Common Ground on the Hill arts camp in Maryland and then write again from Rome. Arrividerci!

John, you were greatly missed at The Buzz Bar 420 party. You were definately here in spirit. The house was packed. In my humble opinion it may have been one of the greatest jam sessions in recent detroit history. I echo John's endorsement of Pun Plamondon's 'Lost From The Ottawa' and recommend it highly - both literally and figuratively. Powerful staff. With Pun's kind permission, I'm using a few passages to launch my latest literary leap.
John - Davison's still there - empty with your absence. Except for Whitey's Fish & Chips. *
