It's Tuesday and I'm still trying to get this thing right. A lot of great mail came in from people I put on my initial mailing list, and it was terrific to hear from everybody.
Lowell Boileau writes from Detroit to say: "It looks like the link you want to send is: http://www.travelpod.com/first-travelogue-entry/johnsinclair/spring_2006/tpod.html
Lowell has one of the greatest websites of all time: The Fabulous Ruins of Detroit at www.DetroitYES.com and is one of my favorite of all painters as well. Thanks, bro! I read on-line today that they fixing to tear down Tiger Stadium. The rotten motherfuckers!
Bob Baldori sent me a fine photo of his family in Okemos, Michigan which I think I'll post here today
Just'enuf Joe writes from the Bay Area or Memphis or New Orleans wondering if all is bread and roses for the traveler here. Joe, this is one of the toughest trips I've ever undertaken, but at the same time it's exactly the one I chose, and I'm enjoying the hell out of it almost every day.
When Nay Ragin was voted Mayor of New Orleans four years ago and then I was evicted from my home in March of 2003, I decided that if I couldn't pay my rent after 12 years of unbelievable acceptance in New Orleans, it wasn't ever going to work for me. I had friends in Amsterdam who were urging me to move to Holland, including one friend who is the proprietor of a coffeeshop and offered to cover my expenses if I would come over by myself and get settled and then bring my wife Penny over to join me. Penny and I decided this was worth pursuing, and she moved to Detroit for the duration to be with her mother and family. I spent a few months in Detroit and touring the US and then came to Amsterdam for the 2003 Cannabis Cup and stayed for the winter. Since then I've criss crossed the ocean, spending two to three months at a time in either Holland or America and enjoying the support of several beloved patrons who help me with my plane tickets and travel costs, not to mention the many people who put me up
This is quite an adventure for an old person with no visible means of support. I don't have a home of my own any more and my current possessions can be carried in three or four suitcases and little bags. The up side is that I don't have any rent, any bills or other burdens except buying time for my pre-pay cell phone and the usual questions associated with Food & Drug Administration and travel issues. I make a little money writing and doing performances and selling my little products and otherwise subsist through the grace and good will of my friends and co-conspirators.
When I talk about my utter penury, however, I'm not complaining, I'm just reporting some of the results of this interesting life experiment I'm in the middle of in my 65th year. I'm doing exactly what I want to do and I don't give a fuck about material possessions any more -- I just want to do my work and see my friends and relax and get high and be happy in my daily life...and I won't do anything else! The only regret I have so far is that my wife Penny has decided she doesn't want to live in Europe with me, and now I'm out here completely on my own. But I can't stand living in the United Snakes any more, and I love it here in Amsterdam, life here fits me to a T, and I'm going to keep on trying to make the most of it every day as long as I'm allowed to roam around on this earth.
I'll write some more tonight under a new heading: Radio Free Amsterdam....
