After Dry Tortugas, I wanted to get a little R&R on the beach so I headed back up the Keys to a couple of great State Parks.  I pretty much did a whole lot of nothing except ly on the beach and catch some rays or go snorkeling.  Yeah, another tough day at the office!  ; )

The Park at Long Key is on the Atlantic side of the island and the camp sites are right on the beach, any closer and my tires would get wet!  Being coral islands, the Keys have very shallow water all around them for up to a mile.  This place is perfect for snorkeling and fishing.  I brought a pole with me but, couldn't get off my butt long enough to toss a line (sorry Curtis).  The shallows have huge sea grass beds that are full of shell fish, lobsters, fan and brain corals, and colorful tropical fish everywhere. The water was a comfortable 75 degrees, but not tropical warm like in the summer.  When you get tired, just sit up and you are out of the water, sweet!

Bahia Honda has a very similar set-up with the addition of a small marina.  You can boat camp here and wade ashore anytime.  This park also planted a butterfly garden, so I got some good pics of nice orange critters.

Wish I could spend a week here, but you really need to book in advance (up to a year) to get more than a couple days in a row.  These parks are favorites of the locals as well as travelers, so they are usually full even in the off season.  Next trip, I'll plan to spend more time.

p.s. On the way out, I passed this billboard and had to take a pic for all my Silicon Valley compadres.  These people have serious issues when it comes to fishing!  ;  )

Now, on to the Everglades!
