I picked up a national parks pass when I visited Canyonlands in Utah. So I'm doing my best to visit as many as I can on this trip. White Sands National Monument is a very unique place. I've visited several parks with dune fields like Death Valley, Mohave, and even Mexico but this place is amazing!
This sand is not your typical quartz mix, but pure white gypsum crystals. Along with the brilliant sand, a unique ecosystems and wildlife have developed here. The other cool thing is that the park is surrounded by the White Sands Missile Test Range! This is the birthplace of the American rocket. Since I will be going to the Kennedy Space Center when I get to Florida, I decided to pass on the missile museums that are everywhere around here.
Anyway, enjoy the pics, it's on to Carlsbad Caverns next!
