So I made the BIG leap West and finally started my long trip in the direction of home. I am writing this report from the Southern most point of South Korea. As first impressions go the differences between Korea and Japan are night and day. More ramblings about Korea after I get settled in.
I ended my more then enjoyable month long Japanese stint with a moving "life experience" in the city of Hiroshima. I am sure the world over the word Hiroshima brings up many different images to peoples minds. The one thing that is for certain is that no matter what you think of the situation it will forever bring up emotions in people. Hiroshima will always be known as the first city in history subjected to nuclear warfare with the atomic bombings of Hiroshima during the final days of World War II. One of the main reasons I was drawn to Japan was that I wanted to see and experience Hiroshima for myself. I had no idea what/how I would feel when I got there? It was a strange yet calming experience to be in the exact spot (the hypo-center) where one of the darkest days in the history of the world occurred. On August 6, 1945 the nuclear weapon Little Boy was dropped on Hiroshima by the crew of the Enola Gay, killing directly an estimated 80,000 people (the overwhelming majority of whom were civilians.) An estimated 60,000 more people have died from injuries or radiation poisoning since the deadly 1945 attack.
It just amazes me that we can let ourselves get to the point that we could even fathom this type of thing as a solution to any of our problems. The thing that blows my mind even further is that we do not seem to learn from our past mistakes. Wars and problems of this caliber unfortunately are not started by the people who ultimately suffer the consequences. These types of disastrous events are started by out of control politicians and world leaders. And by the way, we are all to blame for this! We continue to elect /allow these "ass ponies" to come into power. At this point in my journey I can say with some authority/confidence that people through out the world are alike in one aspect. The main thing most people seem to want out of life is to be left alone to live in peace (and maybe a pretty wife and few cold ones in the evening!) After all that has happened in recent memory here we are today heading down the same path? The Bush administration has been a dangerous experiment for the USA and the world alike. It is no longer a secret that this administrations will go down as one of the worse presidential administration in history of the USA. The last few years have proven to be a rough time for us all. As bad as hurricane Katrina was for New Orleans (my home) one good thing did come out of it, the incompetence of the Bush administration was exposed to America and the world. From the botched operations in Afghanistan, watching people die in the streets of New Orleans, to the hopeless war in Iraq! If anything good can come out of this rocky time in our history (the momentary lapse of reasoning we had putting these clowns into power) hopefully it is we have learned from our mistakes. I would be lying to say I did not like watching the "selfish little bugger" squirm over the past 16 months since Katrina, but it has gotten to the point where my American pride has gotten the better of me and I want the best for my country more then I like to watch the President suffer. You know the President has really fallen from grace when he starts to lose his control over middle America! These people love Jesus, NASCAR, John "Cougar" Mellencamp, Bush beer, pot luck dinners, Bush the Pres, high school football, and going to Wal-Mart on Sundays (in that particular order.) And now they are starting to subtract "Debwa" from that list! I hate to admit that I almost feel sorry for the guy? I guess above all I feel for him as another human being. Believe it or not he is human and we all make mistakes (no matter if he always has our best interest at heart.) As for being human the verdict is still out on Dickey, and as for Condi, she is a prime example of stem cell research gone bad! But with George it is a sad site to see. It is hard not to fell for the guy no matter how much you might dislike him. The poor fellow just looks tired and broken? It makes me cringe every time I see him on TV. On the flip side it looks as the America people have had enough of these shenanigans and are starting to voice their oppositions! What a better statement the American people can make to the world other then making it known that they have enough with the way things are going and want a change!
For reasons beyond my understanding I cannot stop watching the Saddam coverage of his execution? Saddam was a "bad boy" and I am not justifying has actions in anyway but what was that all about (and the video footage?) The guy is now a martyr/hero! The crazy thing is that Washington reportedly spent $128 million trying to present the captured dictator's trial as free, dignified and fair. And it was all blown with a $7 hanging and a fuzzy cell phone video. We have made a villain into a hero? What a disaster we have created for ourselves! Words cannot describe what a sad state this world has become. The crazy part is that reading that online it got equal amount of news coverage as the Britteny Spears New Years Eve debate -was she napping or was she passed out? That kind of thing just blows my mind! As I am typing this nonsense I am watching a news report on CNN about the mentioning of Israel using nuclear weapons against Iran? We are pointing ourselves in a dangerous direction! If we don't wake up and change our ways soon Hiroshima will only be a pleasant memory.
Interesting facts:
*It has been 22437 days since the first and only atomic bomb was dropped on a population.
*It has been 92 days since the latest nuclear test (North Korea.) That is just a few hours away from where I am writing this.
