Canary Islands
Entry 29 of 40 | show all | print this entry |
I'm back from a week-long trip to Tenerife, one of the islands that make up the Canaries. It wasn't exactly what I expected, mainly because the British have taken it over and put up all these tacky restaurants and karaoke bars. Despite that, there were still some amazing sites and good beaches. Plus, food was a lot cheaper than in Madrid. There were 9 of us total, mostly the usual crew that you've seen in my other pics.
The majority of the island is desert. The mountains were a pretty impressive backdrop to the beach though.

One of the beaches.

Friends

Despite the fact that the island was kinda touristy , there were still some places that were still pretty amazing.

Another shot, but during the daytime.

My Venezuelan friend Gaby made arepas, which are made of corn flour, kinda like a Thomas' English muffin, but much better. Even though our apartments had kitchens, we ended up mostly eating out because cooking for 9 is kinda difficult.

That building off the cliff is an amazing restaurant overlooking the ocean. We ate there on Tuesday night, definitely one of the best meals I've had in Spain.

Before going to the beach.

Europeans take tanning very seriously. Almost half the women were topless, which also meant that a lot of guys were wearing speedos.=/

Another nice shot.

On Monday, we took a boat ride to go whale watching. Omg, I got sooo seasick on the way there because the boat was going against the waves, and it didn't help that the waves were really strong that day. We were all being tossed around like rag dolls, even Dramamine didn't help. Here's me before I emptied my stomach.

We saw some pilot whales, pretty neat.

This one stuck its head out of the water for us.

Amazing cliffs off the coast of Tenerife. Too bad I was too bleh to really soak it in.
The picture looks kinda foggy because the winds from Africa kick up sand particles that stay suspended in the air.
These are fishing nets.

After a swim, I felt much better.

The ride home was much smoother, a lot of fun. There was salsa music blaring from the boat's speakers and we danced. My friends are the epitome of Latin lovers, suave and all. Good thing I took a salsa class back in the day, otherwise I'd be totally out of the loop.

We spent the next few days sitting under thatched roof umbrellas, soaking up the sun. It was a really weird experience for me, just sitting there for hours on end, doing nothing. But I thoroughly enjoyed it.

A night out. (Notice how tanned I am?!)

Some flowers.

On the last day, everybody went to the waterpark. I opted out, cause honestly, there are waterparks everywhere in Cali. Instead, I chose to take a bus to another town and explore. While most of the towns in Tenerife are nondescript with boxy ugly houses, Granadilla was a pleasant exception.

The church.

Courtyard of a home.

Outside a flower shop.

I wanted to take this window home with me!! I'm a huge fan of old stuff like this. Maybe I inherited it from my flea-market king grandpa. Hahaha.

That's all for now. Can you believe I only have 1 1/2 months left in Spain?? Actually, not even. In August, I'm going to Paris, Berlin, Prague, Budapest, Salzburg, and Vienna for 2 weeks. Even though I'm not counting the days, I can say I'm ready to go home. There's sooo much that has happened and so much more that's gonna happen. I'm sick of missing out!
I've passed all my classes, (including Management Accounting and Control this semester, a miracle!!) so all that's left is my business plan... oh and one final month of teaching English. Woot woot! Can't wait to see you guys again.

An Island with two sides (reply) Jul 22, 2008 13:28 EST by jaycee7
Nice post, but you clearly went to the side of the island developed just for tourists i.e. the south and south west. Most Canarians, and the historic towns are all in the north and north west which is lush and sub tropical. Check it out next time, you'll find a completely different island.
Still, sounds like you had a good time.
