I decided to take the advice of the brazilian girl I met in bariloche and went from mendoza straight to viņa del mar instead of going via santiago. The scenery was amazing, big snowtopped mountains and open spaces, I'm not sure what the road from mendoza to santiago is like but this would take some beating.

I met an aussie on the bus who had missed his bus and got on this one instead and he was good company. Crossing the border took an age, I don't know why but it was just really slow. At the border there were a few kiock and one of them had a magazine in the window with a picture of Pinochet, who had just died a few days earlier, on the cover and it said Liz Taylor. So I was thinking, what's the story, did Liz Taylor die as well. So I asked the woman in the shop what the story was, did Liz Taylor die as well and she started laughing and said no, that in Chile "Liz Taylor" is slang for dead, so Pinochet was a bit "Liz Taylor". Dunno what her pr people would think about that, but I thought it was funny.

We eventually made it to viņa and just spent one night there, I went out for a look round the town which was pretty nice and then met up with the aussie and we went for a few beers in a cool bar. And that was about it. The next day I checked out a park in town which was nice and then headed for Santiago. The guy from the hostel gave me a lift to the station and helped me put on my overloaded rucksack and daypak and said "now, you're ready for your moon-walk".
