Where I stayed
Done 51st Street from our first stop was St Patrick's Cathedral. The Cathedral was undergoing major external and internal restorations with scaffolding obscuring most of the ornate structure.
From St Pat's we found Grand Central Station and a break from the hot, humid conditions. Again filled with people either busily making their way or like us just wanting to see.
Then down to the Hudson River, to the United Nations Building. This iconic building was looking a little worse for wear, almost shabby and somewhat disappointing after a considerable walk. Crossing the road back to midtown I twisted my knee again so we decided to catch a taxi downtown to Time Square
Time Square during the day was as vibrant as one would expect. Bright lights, flashy stores and people. We were immediately attracted to the Hard Rock Cafe. The walls will adorned by music memorabillia from the Beatles to Puff Daddy!
From Time Square and my knee feeling a bit better, we decided to visit the Empire State building. Before getting to the Empire State we took a walk around a local park for a coffee despite the fact it was still about 37C.
Getting to Empire State and after going through security, queuing took some time but we eventually got to the lifts which took us to the 80th floor and then another lift to the viewing platform on the 84th floor. The view was magnificent on all 4 sides of the viewing platform as the pictures depict.
From Empire State, it was down to Fifth Ave and our first look at the shops. Saks, Fifth Ave was the first shop we went into and the Summer sales were on! Heavily discounted meant prices reduced from $3000 to $1500. Julie both a scarf reduced from $150 to $35 and got a Saks Bag to suit. Got out of that cheaply!!
