flew from beijing to urumqi this morning and had a layover. I got the boarding pass for my onward flight and was waiting in line for security... and said "I don't really want to wait HERE" so I went outside and it took all of one minute to find a taxi driver that spoke clean mandarin, and I told him I wanted to see all of urumuqi in three hours. he was really, really excited about it and got on the radio with his friends to ask what there is to see in urumuqi (he had lived there his whole life). they weren't too sure either, but they all agreed that we should eat lamb and drink beer. sounded good.

we got stuck in a traffic jam and didn't have as much time as we planned. urumqi, as it sprawls from the airport, seems to be mostly made up of the old buildings that have already been demolished in the rest of china. wait, I have to be careful about saying that- I mean the old, bland, communist apartment buildings, not beautiful wooden hutongs! the town center has mosques and a cool market place. my driver, Feng, took me to THE place to eat lamb, and it was actually probably the best I have ever eaten. instead of the wooden splinter with razor blade thin pieces of lamb that you get in beijing, xinjiang kebabs came on swords with giant pieces of meat. it was great. also served was a bowl of fresh yogurt (to wash down the lamb?), a spicy liang cai, and a cool briyani kind of rice dish with, of course, more lamb inside. What's the downside? no beer served inside! we got bottles to go on our rush back to the airport, which involved, among other things, driving on the sidewalk to get me back to the airport in time.
