We headed off to Rotorua for a couple days to recuperate after our hike. We sat in hot springs for the most part, and looked at some of the mud pots and geothermal features in the area. Then we went to Taupo for a night. I don't have any pictures of this. John, Marc, and Nadine all went skydiving. I didn't take any pcitures because I was hiding at the hostel, not intersted in watching my husband, cousin, and dear friend hurtling through the sky. They had fun, though. Then we went to National Park village, outside of Tongariro National Park. We were going to do the Northern Circuit Great Walk, but because of the state of our knees after Waikaremoana, we decided to do just the famous day hike, the Tongariro Crossing. This was probably the highlight of my two weeks on the North Island, the hike was otherworldy. Tongariro is Mordor in the Lord of the Rings movies. We hiked with views of Mt. Doom most of the day!
So far, I don't have any pictures of the canoe trip on the Whanganui River, but will try to post some if Nadine sends me some pictures. My camera was buried in a dry bag because I tend to tip, flip, or sink at any possible moment. I am very happy to say that John and I did NOT flip the entire time. John fell out of the canoe one time but that was his own fault--he stood up in a rapid because his lap was full of water. We also filled up once through a pretty huge rapid. Our canoe was sunk in and we just paddled with our boat underwater until we could pull over and drain it.
