Washington - Smithsonian etc. again.
The first stop today was a mega walk up the mall (the green strip up to the Lincoln Memorial -you have seen photos of Abe Lincoln, sculpted from marble sitting on a high backed chair.) In galleries on either side were engraved a couple of his speeches.  Interesting.  In the longer one he made quite a few quotes from the Bible.   This was part of his second inaugural speech while the Civil War was on:
"Neither party expected for the war the magnitude or the duration which it has already attained. Neither anticipated that the cause of the conflict might cease with or even before the conflict itself should cease. Each looked for an easier triumph, and a result less fundamental and astounding. Both read the same Bible and pray to the same God, and each invokes His aid against the other. It may seem strange that any men should dare to ask a just God's assistance in wringing their bread from the sweat of other men's faces, but let us judge not, that we be not judged. The prayers of both could not be answered. That of neither has been answered fully. The Almighty has His own purposes."
Out front was a lit stand and it was nice to chat to Spencer while Helen spoke with the two sisters. They were usually in the middle with two lit carts but today respectfully withdrew a little distance as there was a US Marines ceremony as some were leaving the army.
Around the park to in front of the White House until a policeman on a pushbike gave orders for every one to clear the area, why?  I wanted a picture ( but I didnt ask or argue with him!  You dont argue with these guys!)  About 30 mins later the presidential helicopter flew in.  Helen was able to snap a pic before we left, and you can see the security teams on the roof.  Must be procedure every time BO comes or goes.
Next were the Natural History and American Indian museums. The former was really good,  as the pics will show. The American Indian museum Helen found interesting, but I was expecting more of the Indian experience, but much was on finding their identity and mother earth. A few displays on clothing and way of life.  Smithsonion has a number of museums - massive buildings. There are massive building everywhere in this place - the American Archives building takes up a large city block.  They have a lot of history so need a big place to store and display.
Stopped to look at a few shops closer to home - how do you like this jacket?  I think it would go down well in NN Kingdom Hall!
Saturday:  Helen and I today took the train to Alexandria, Virginia - called Old Town only 30 mins away on the train- mostly in the subway.  So we have visited one more state than Brendan and Roni.  Hah!  A nice relaxing day.  One can stand on the shore of the Potomac River in Virginia and see two other states across the river, DC and Maryland.  It has history, and is quite picturesque.  Looked in the window of a quaint floating building, and was invited in by an old wooden boatbuilder (the boats were wooden not the man - he was quite friendly and not a hard case.)  We chatted about various timbers and what he does here.  Saw a paddle steamer - a wedding party had hired it for a river cruise.
Leaving here tomorrow AM Sunday by train for New Jersey - convention week.  Tuesday Brooklyn with lunch there and Jersey City Assembly Hall.  Wednesday field service and evening program. Thursday Wallkill and Patterson, with lunch at one or the other.  Some early starts - bus pick up at 6 am Thursday, 7 am each convention day.  So it will be a busy week but will make time to share a few photos.

 Warmest greetings

John & Helen
